      VAXstation 2000 Disk Cables

   This document describes the cables in the CPU box connecting the CPU,
internal disk drives, and the Interface Adapter board in the CPU-base
box (under the main CPU box).  It also describes the cables in the
external disk drive expansion box.

   Cable ("C") numbers and female (jack, "J") and male (plug, "P")
connector designations are generally mine, not official Digital
designations.  The designations of IA-J1 and IA-J2 on the Interface
Adapter board agree with the "J1" and "J2" in copper on the board.

   One 60-conductor ribbon cable (C1) connects to the CPU at one end
(C1-J1), and the other end splits into three parts.  One part (C1-J2)
goes to the internal floppy drive (RX33).  One part (C1-J3) goes to the
wide connector on the internal hard disk and from there (daisy-chained
to C1-J4) it goes on to the Interface Adapter board (IA-J1) in the
CPU-base box (under the main CPU box).  One part (C1-J5) goes to the
narrow connector on the internal hard disk.

   One 20-conductor ribbon cable (C2) connects to the CPU at one end
(C2-J1), and at the other end (C2-J2) to the Interface Adapter board in
the CPU-base box, under the main CPU box.

   The Interface Adapter board connects C1-J4 and C2-J2 to a female,
50-pin, 3-row, D connector on the back of the CPU-base box.

   A straight-through cable runs from the D connector on the CPU-base
box to a similar one on the back of the external disk expansion box. 
Inside the expansion box, a 50-conductor cable (C3) runs from the D
connector and splits to go to the wide and narrow connectors on the
expansion disk drive.

   ST506/512 Interface Adapter:
      2x13 pin (0.01 inch pitch) male (IA-P1, "J1" on board) to CPU-J2
      2x10 pin (0.01 inch pitch) male (IA-P2, "J2" on board) to C2-J2
      50 pin (3 row) D connector female (IA-J3)

   Expansion Box:
      2x17 conductor card-edge female (EB-J1) to external hard disk
      2x10 conductor card-edge female (EB-J2) to external hard disk
      50 pin (3 row) D connector female (EB-J3)


   The pins on the 50-pin female D connector on the Interface Adapter
board in the CPU-base box are numbered as shown below.

   The pins on the 50-pin female D connector on the expansion box are
numbered to correspond naturally to the conductors in the ribbon cable,
as shown below.  The normal numbering scheme for these 3-row D
connectors is the one shown above.  However, at least one unit (mine)
uses a connector in which the pins are numbered as shown below. 
Regardless of how the pins are actually marked on the connectors, the
conductors in the ribbon cable correspond to the numbering scheme shown
below.

   Notes:

   1.  The Interface Adapter board connects many lines together
       (ground).  This is shown by the lines in the IA-J3 column.

   2.  The Interface Adapter board arranges to transpose conductors 30
       and 32 on the wide connector for the external hard disk.  This is
       marked by "****" between the EB-J3 and EB-J1 columns.  Other
       lines pass straight through (or not at all).  The "****" lines
       are the lines for the Drive Select jumpers DS3 and DS4.  The
       Drive Select jumpers on both the internal hard disk and the
       external hard disk are set to DS3.  The effect of the
       transposition is to make the external hard disk appear to be set
       to DS4, when the jumper on the disk drive is actually DS3.
